G E N T I L E Z A  D E  U M  G I G A N T E 

Uma mesa. Uma mulher, um homem. Uma paisagem gradualmente construída à frente de seus corpos nus. Um passado e um presente sob o jugo de suas manobras pueris. Mãos que se movem e constroem mundos diminutos envoltos em um panorama instável, largo, em desastrosa, porém sublime evolução. Gentileza de um gigante evoca, em uma sucessão de panoramas em miniaturas, o constante e paradoxal confronto entre um mundo feito à medida do homem e um mundo que corre para além de si e dos seus poderes orquestradores, onde a paisagem tange o indizível, o inefável, o sublime.

A table. A woman, a man. A landscape gradually built ahead of their naked bodies. A past and a present under the yoke of their childish maneuvers. Hands that move and build miniature worlds wrapped in a panorama unstable, broad in disastrous, however sublime evolution. Gentleness of a giant evokes, in a succession of landscapes in miniature, the constant and paradoxical confrontation between a world tailor-made man and a world that goes beyond itself and its orchestrators powers, where the landscape regarding the unspeakable, the ineffable, the sublime.

THOSE WHO WALK ON THE GROUND, WHO CLIMB TREES, WHO BEAR WINGS

A world adrift experienced in a diorama by the distance that it preserves, puts in evidence and makes disappear. A mutable panorama where the natural museum meets the tragical theater and the comedy enlaces fiction with real time.

Still - sob o estado das coisas (2007)

Still – under the state of things

There is an initial universe of reference: Still life. Objects taken from daily life, ordinary in appearance and existence, holders of realities, framers of situations, promoters and activators of presences, ephemeral symbols of one’s life and moments.

Two terms making one: Still and Life.

When photography was its earlier times, a photographer, when about to take a picture, would yell: Still! And the people would hold their breath for this short pause of seconds until the image, its light, was finally printed upon the paper. An extended instant.

Still as pause, silence, rest, or something which doesn’t exist yet, but which is about to happen, to gain existence. A certain ambiguity between what is actually happening and what is in pause, between flow of real time and time in suspension.

In an immersive ambiance inhabited by images, movements and texts, Still – sob o estado das coisas takes the public for a kaleidoscopic journey though what one selects as the holders of one’s reality, one’s feeling of belonging to one specific time and space. A trip through sensorial and imagetic situations, where performer and spectators witness each other as they advance together in a common present. Inspired in the ways contemporary media has been spanning our understanding of real and virtual situations, Still works as this still life made of ordinary bodies, objects and words.

A multi-media project by Gustavo Ciríaco in collaboration with the Norwegian setdesigner and architect, Anniken Romuld, Still – under the state of things was premiered in April 2007, in São Paulo at SESC Avenida Paulista. It was awarded the APCA prize (São Paulo Art Critics Association) as the best dance conception and nominated for the Bravo! Prize as one of the best dance performances in 2007. Since then, Still has been performed in different cities like Berlin, Havana and Rio de Janeiro.
